Inside China's sports schools in search for next Olympic star Heartbreaking images of a child crying have emerged from a children's school in China, a country where in the past, young children have been placed in schools designed to train future Olympic champions. It's one of many pictures captured in sporting schools across China of young children being put through gruelling training routines at ages as young as six. However, things are changing in the country as demographics shift as the country grows more prosperous and a larger focus is placed on different forms of education. China's sports system has been enormously successful since the country returned to the Olympic fold in 1980, culminating with the host nation topping the medals' table at the 2008 Beijing Olympics with only a slight dip into second place behind the United States in London four years later. Fewer parents are willing to let their children endure gruelling training routines, leading to a fall in student numbers. Some schools have closed and others are adjusting the way they work. The number of sport schools is down from 3,687 in 1990, government numbers show. At Shanghai's No.1 Children's Sports School Pudong New Area where the change is unfolding, the school's party committee secretary, Huang Qin, said: 'In the 1980s and 1990s, schools like ours were extremely attractive'. '(But) parents are less willing now to send their child to sports schools The school's alumni include former Olympians such as hurdler Chen Yanhao and female footballer Xie Huilin.if they perform fairly well in exams...The source of students for sports schools has shrunk as society placed more importance on cultural education.' Debates about the continued relevance of the sports school system began to emerge around the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Huang and other schools said, as emerging tales of difficulties facing retired athletes jarred against rising expectations of education standards among China's booming middle-class. The country's declining birth rate as a result of China's one-child policy has not helped either, along with its cut-throat education system, which sees Chinese students spend twice as much time on homework a day compared to the global average. Beijing responded to these concerns in 2010 by issuing a new policy, known as document 23, ordering sport schools to improve teaching standards and to give more support to retired athletes. At the No.1 Children's Sports School Pudong New Area, Huang said it had improved its teacher training. Three years ago, it also relaxed a 40-year tradition of requiring its entire student cohort to study, train and live full-time on campus. Now, more than half of the school's 700 athletes study at other schools. Of its remaining 300 or so full-time students, about 10 percent live off-campus. Other schools like the Shanghai Yangpu Youth Amateur Athletic School, are going into kindergartens to advertise gymnastics as an after-school play time activity to parents. 'We call it happy gymnastics,' said principal Zhu Zengxiang. At Beijing's Shichahai, adorned with posters extolling the feats of ex-students turned Olympic champions, vice-head Zhang Jing said the school offered 'comprehensive development' and equipped athletes with the skills needed for life after sport. The Shanghai Sports School, whose alumni include former Olympic swimming champion Liu Zige, began in 2012 to reject athletes that did not pass its academic entrance exams, and tells parents it wants to use sports training to educate rather than as an end-goal, according to principal Sheng Maowu. 'A lot of sport schools are moving in this direction...but this is a painful process,' he said. 'At present the existing thought is that education and training are two different routes -- if you want to be a world champion you cannot study. This belief is wrong...and at the end of the day very few become champions.' The government does not publish student enrolment at its sports schools, but there are signs that the changing landscape has already begun to impact China's pool of sporting talent. In April, the China Sports Daily reported that the number of Chinese athletes training to be table tennis players had fallen by almost a quarter since 1987 to 23,266. 'In this changing situation, we must re-examine the traditional training system and model for competitive sports,' Liu Shaonong, head of the table tennis and badminton centre of China's General Administration of Sport, was quoted as saying. Reform, however, is proving slow to take root. In March, a government survey found that some schools inspected across nine cities and provinces did not spend enough money on education, and some local education departments paid little attention to making improvements in line with document 23, according to state media.

Taiwanese pop star Ko Chen-tung apologises during a news conference, after being released from a nearly two-week detention along with Jackie Chan's son by Beijing police on charges of drug use. Full Story: Taiwanese actor and singer Ko Chen-tung cried and apologised at a news conference in Beijing on Friday for using drugs that put him in detention by Beijing police for nearly two weeks. Police arrested Ko, 23, after a drug test found he used marijuana, Xinhua news agency had said. They had also arrested, Jaycee Chan, 32, the son of Hong Kong kungfu movie star Jackie Chan, after he tested positive for marijuana, police had said. Jaycee Chan and Ko were arrested in central Beijing after police received a tip-off from residents, the state-backed Global Times reported. Ko was released from a detention centre early on Friday. After the release, Ko along with his parents headed to a hotel in Beijing. In a news conference on Friday afternoon, Ko bowed in apology to the media upon his arrival. "Hello journalist friends, I am Ko Chen-tung. Since this happened, you have all worked so hard. I feel terribly sorry. I apologise for what I did, I made a mistake. There is no reason, no excuse. I simply made a mistake," said a crying Ko. "What I feel the most sad about, and the most worried about is my family members, who have been put under huge pressure due to my personal selfish and stupid behaviour. My parents and my older brother all feel very sad," he added. Ko also said he disappointed his fans. "I've disappointed you. What I did was wrong, very, very wrong, and illegal. Do not follow my example. I don't wish to spread this kind of negativity to you. But this has happened, and I will work hard to change and I will never do anything illegal again," he said. Ko is scheduled to leave Beijing for Taiwan on Friday evening. The use of drugs in China, particularly synthetic drugs like methamphetamine, ketamine and ecstasy, has grown along with the rise of a new urban class with greater disposable income. Drug-related crimes carry harsh penalties in China including death or life imprisonment in serious cases. China has detained a string of other mostly B-list celebrities in recent months on drug-related charges, cases that have been publicized widely in both state and social media. They have included movie and television stars, film directors and a prominent screenwriter. All seven titles at stake were captured by this latest batch of Chinese tourists with South Korea having the temerity to have two of their squad contest the mixed doubles final but without success. Having failed to win the coveted men's singles title in 1978, when he was beaten by the more experienced Li Zhenshi at Brighton, Teng Yi, now aged 19, was not to be denied on this most recent occasion when victorious over another compatriot in the person of Jiang Jialiang, aged 17, winner of the Scandinavian and Cleveland 3-Star titles. But, in the counterpart women's event, Chen Lili added the English title to that of the Scandinavian when victorious over Dai Lili in a five game marathon. Teng Yi took his second title at Crawley when, partnered by the high-serving Fan Changmao, final victory was accomplished over their fellow countrymen Chen Xinhua and Jiang Jialiang. And Chen Lili also made it a double take, winning the mixed event paired with Chen Xinhua. Sharing the titles around Chen Jieling and Dai Lili succeeded in the women's doubles and all this after China had swamped the two team events with China II beating China I on both occasions. No less than sixteen countries were represented in the team events and yet only France (men) and Yugoslavia (women) succeeded in reaching the semi-finals.
